OUR HISTORY

WHEN WE ORGANIZE, WE WIN

2021

  • CIDU-CWA 7777 resumes organizing drivers, after initially starting in 2019 and having to pause due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, and begins to mobilize drivers to demand that the Public Utilities Commission enforce the 2014 Transportation Network Company (TNC) Act.  As one of the first states to regulate TNCs in 2014, Colorado’s law requires that TNCs “make available to prospective riders and drivers the method by which it calculates fares or the applicable rates being charged, and an option to receive an estimated fare.”

2022

  • House Bill 22-1089 Rideshares And Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage is introduced, and signed into law. CIDU’s efforts passing HB22-1089 resulted in ensuring that transportation network companies (i.e Uber,Lyft) provide insurance to rideshare drivers and passengers in the event of an incident involving an uninsured motorist.

  • Drivers and allies came together and marched to the Public Utilities Commission’s headquarters to deliver a demand letter, demanding that the PUC enforce the 2014 TNC Act and provide drivers with pay transparency, as required by law!

  • CIDU-CWA 7777, member and driver, Stephanie Vigil is elected to Statehouse District 16 and takes the fight for driver dignity to the statehouse!

  • Drivers at the Denver International Airport Commercial Lot escalate their demands for fair wages, and just deactivation policies by striking, shutting down the lot for over 4 hours costing the big tech giants thousands! Our first strike, but certainly not the last; drivers united will never be divided!

2023

  • CIDU-CWA 777 launches the beginning of our campaign to educate drivers through a series of pop-up clinics fighting back against unfair account deactivations

  • S23-098 Gig Work Transparency Act introduced but vetoed. After more than a year of organizing drivers we worked with our supporters in the legislature to introduce legislation demanding transparency from Delivery and Transportation Network Companies, such as Uber, Lyft, Doordash etc., regarding rates paid by customer and to drivers and the policies the companies have regarding deactivating drivers from the platforms; beholded to the demands of corporate interest, Governor Polis vetoed the bill.

  • Drivers and supporters take to the airport lot again on May 4th to join drivers across the country in a national day of action demanding fair pay and an end to unjust deactivations.

2024

  • CIDU-CWA 7777 members join organizers and drivers from across the country fighting unjust deactivations to collectively deliver our demands for dignity and just wages directly to the doorstep of the corporate giants.

  • After being vetoed in 2023, drivers continued to organize and apply pressure for the up 2024 legislative session for the reintroduction of the Transportation Network Company (TNC) Transparency Act (SB24-075). Drivers and supporters mobilized to demand the passage of the TNC Transparency Act and were successful in securing major wins! With the passage of the TNC Transparency Act, rideshare companies are now required to: provide transparency to rideshare drivers and consumers regarding payments, and develop a deactivation policy for drivers. The law also directs the Department of Labor and Employment to certify an organization to support TNC drivers with account deactivations.

  • Similar to the TNC Transparency Act, our organization was also able to secure similar wins regarding transparency and deactivation policies for delivery network drivers who operate on a delivery network companies (DNC) platform such as Uber eats and Doordash.The Protections for Delivery Network Company (DNC) Drivers Act (HB 24-1129) provides also provides DNC drivers with a specific allotted amount of time to accept delivery requests, and requires DNSs to inform consumer of safety steps for drivers such as securing pets and other hazards.

  • City and County of Denver formally recognizes the importance of CIDU-CWA7777 in advocating for and giving a voice to rideshare drivers providing an essential service to citizens and visitors across the denver metro. You can read the proclamation here.

  • City and County of Denver agree to spend $189,000 on airport lot improvements, electric vehicle chargers and a food truck to serve drivers waiting for rides.

2025

  • In reaction to Uber suing to stop the TNC Transparency Act, that ensures drivers get fair treatment and riders know where their money goes, driver launch a series of strikes and actions to demand Uber’s greed doesn’t the implementation of the TNC Transparency Act. Ultimately the law prevailed and the legal challenges wer not successful.

  • CIDU organizers travel to the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland to demand that the 113th International Labour Conference create standard for fair pay, workplace protections and an end to abuse by digital platforms. Our fight for dignified work is international! You can learn more about the resolution adopted by the ILO advocating for standards in app based work across the country here.

  • CIDU drivers mobilize, and travel to Washington D.C. to take part in introducing the Empower App Based Workers Act. The bill introduced by Representatives Omar, Lee, Jayapl and Norcross would secure the major following rights for drivers:

    • Require weekly pay statements and itemized receipts so app-based workers know exactly how their earnings are calculated;

    • Require transparency on electronic monitoring and automated decision-making, including how algorithms determine job assignments;

    • Guarantee ride-hail drivers receive at least 75% of the total amount paid by the consumer;

    Prohibit pay discrimination by ensuring equal pay for equal or comparable work.

  • As a part of the major wins in the TNC Transparency Act, Colorado Independent Drivers United is certified by the Department of Labor and Employment to be the only organization for supporting TNC drivers with account deactivations in the state. The Colorado Independent Drivers United Driver Support Organization formally opens its doors to continue supporting drivers with deactivations on Oct 31st 2025. In the final two months of the year, CIDU supported nearly 200 drivers with deactivations! You can learn more about the rules regulating the Driver Support Organization here.
